Over the course of our respective careers, we have witnessed, and sometimes even been complicit in the lack of formal support offered to executives when they are starting out in a new role.

In large companies, support programmes to help people transition into new roles often exist, but they are rarely implemented effectively. In addition to there sometimes being a lack of resources or a lack of relevance, the implementation of the programme is often hindered by the reality of operations and the many urgent situations the executive needs to manage. This, of course, steers them further away from their only priority: the quality and speed of their integration.

In small to medium organizations, where the support is primarily informal, the integration of an executive is often the result of a random process. After all, executives are supposed to have ‘executive ability’, and that is why they are recruited! Do they really need help with their integration?

We have analyzed several surveys about executives onboarding and they all say the same thing :

  1. Executives feel this is a period of intense pressure: 79% of CEOs recognized that they needed to transform themselves personally to succeed (Egon Zehnder survey, 2017)
  2. The first six months are crucial for determining whether the executive will remain in the organization (LaShawn, T. ‘On-boarding: Maximising Productivity and Retention, 2006)
  3. Onboarding failures are frequent and costly. According to some studies, the cost of a failed integration process for an executive varies between four and ten times the executive’s annual salary(Blake, R. “Employee Retention: What Employee Turnover Really Costs Your Company”, 2006, Center for Creative Leadership)
